Conifer Garden

The Conifer Garden is the first garden planted in the arboretum. Cypress, Yew and Pine families are all represented showing the wide variety of shapes, colors and textures of foliage available. Forms vary from upright to weeping to prostrate, and foliage colors from lime green & yellow to deep green & blue. Not all conifers are evergreen, and the garden also features a weeping Larch, one of the deciduous conifers. This garden demonstrates unique pruning techniques for healthy evergreens.

Pinus parviflora 'Goldilocks'

Featured in the center of the photo is a slow growing Japanese white pine with an intense splash of gold in the winter.

Goldilocks is seasonally decorated with cones.

Picea omorika "Pendula": This is a named cultivar of Serbian Spruce known for a narrow upright growth with weeping limbs.

Pinus strobus "Horsford's Dwarf": This is a dwarf cultivar of the Eastern white pine know for dense branching.

Abies pinsapo "Glauca": This blue Spanish Fir is showing off its bright green new growth in the spring.

Larix decidua - 'Pendula'

This weeping larch is an unusual conifer because it is deciduous, dropping its needles in the fall.

Abies nordmanniana 'Golden Spreader'

This bright gold Nordaman fir tends to grow broader then higher.

Xanthocyparis nootkatensis 'Sparkling Arrow'

An Alaska Cedar with pendulous branches that has creamy white variegation.
