Project Summary
Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens (EA&G) is calling for proposals for a lighted sculpture to hang in the gazebo during the month of December 2023. The Arboretum is a beautiful setting for displaying sculpture in all seasons, and, with approximately 3,500 visitors each month, it provides excellent exposure for artists exhibiting work in the gardens.
Funding
EA&G will pay the artist $1000 for the completed work. Artists are required to sign a contract with EA&G prior to installation and payment. The contract is available to preview upon request.
Evaluation and Selection Criteria
A committee made up of EA&G board members, including two artists, will review all submissions based on the criteria listed below. EA&G reserves the right not to select any of the applicants.
• The sculpture must respond to the Arboretum setting and project requirements.
• The sculpture should be able to withstand the elements and be as vandal-proof as possible (top height of the gazebo ceiling is approximately 23’ making vandalism unlikely).
• The sculpture must be designed so that volunteers can hang it from the ceiling of the gazebo and remove it safely when needed.
• The work must be able to be lighted (standard electrical outlet available) but should be designed to display well during the day without lights.
• All weatherproof media will be considered, including recycled materials.
Location and Description of Site
The Arboretum is accessed from Alverson Boulevard, the entrance to Legion Park, a free public park. The official entrance to the Arboretum is defined by Little and Lewis columns at the far south end of the parking lot. The gazebo is located towards the south end of the gardens. Dimensions: approx. 24 ft. X 18 ft., Height: approx. 23 feet to the very inside top of the cupola. See image of interior. Many options for mounting exist.
